A literary tour de force about the making of a film and representation from a master of the memoir form.
For Nick Flynn, that game we all play-the who-would-play-you-in-the-movie-of-your-life game-has been resolved. The Reenactments chronicles the surreal experience of being on set during the making of the film Being Flynn, from his best-selling memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, and watching the central events of his life reenacted His father's long run of homelessness and his mother's suicide. Flynn tells the story of Robert De Niro's first meeting with his real father in Boston and of watching Julianne Moore attempt to throw herself into the sea. The result is a mesmerizingly sharp-edged and kaleidoscopic literary tour de force as well as a compelling argument about consciousness, representation, and grief.

Minou lives on a tiny island with her father. The island's other inhabitants are the Preacher and Boxman, who makes boxes used by magicians, and the dog No Name. One day, Minou discovers the body of a boy on the beach. She and her father bring them to their small home and keep him cold in one of the bedrooms until the boatmen come with their delivery of supplies. Minou's mother disappeared about a year ago, and they found only one shoe. While Minou holds on to the hope that she will return, her father, a philosopher/fisherman believes she drowned and had a funeral for his wife. Minou relates her family history on the island, including her mother's first appearance in a boat with a peacock and a golden bowl, along with her suitcase. We see how her father became enchanted with this strange woman, and also see the relationships between the other inhabitants and island history. Both of her parents mention trauma from a war, and both Priest and Boxman have their own sadness. While beautifully written from Minou's perspective, the story's plot does not have a strong driving force. I kept expecting something significant to happen to drive the story forward, but this did not occur. The story might even be interpreted as a fantasy in Minou's mind, perhaps to deal with her mother's disappearance/death.Product details

My 5 yr old is in love with this cute little scooby bus. Well made. Normal hotweels style. Its cute and I approve!
It seems promising as one begins, but the pace is too slow and the ending is just plain disappointing. I was expecting a lot from this book, considering the reviews I had read. Sadly, I did not enjoy it at all.
This book made me concentrate on what I was reading. It was out of the box, and at times I wondered, "what am I reading" but you stay with it because of course you wanted to know the ending, which you kind of figured out, but it was a unique read. I liked it.
The setting is good, and the viewpoint of the daughter is well delivered. It has a melancholia that is utterly solid given the circumstances.
I never could nail down what the book was truly about. Perhaps I needed to familiar with the mythology of the country of origin.
It's an odd story that is beautifully written with magical moments and unexplained events. A few books later I still find myself fondly thinking back on it. I read the reviews before I picked it up and I can see why those who didn't like it, didn't like it. I found that I liked that the story was unexpected and it didn't bother me at all that not everything was explained in the end. The writing was amazing, it forced me to slow down and enjoy this unique tale.
I found this book on Oprahs Book list but its the worst book I have read in my life. Stupid as hell, and the author drags on everyyyyyyyyyyy thing he trying to describe. A family on an island in the middle of nowhere with a dead boy that washed ashore that they carried to their house. Are you serious?? and everyday they go talk to DEADBOY thinking they can get answers to where the mother is. Really? but deadboy dont talk so how will that happen. 2ndly there is nothing else going on and its the most boring book on paper along with a dumb story line.
